Instructions Following an Immediate Denture
- Please leave your denture in your mouth for the first night , if possible.
- Tomorrow morning, take our your denture and clean it with a denture brush and water, then put denture back in your mouth. Avoid leaving your denture out longer then 10-15 minutes at a time during the first four days following extractions. This is due to swelling that may inhibit the denture from going back into place. If it doesn't go into place, leave it out. when the swelling goes down we will be able to refit the denture.
- Repeat cleaning procedure in step 2 after every meal. However, at this time (24 hours after extractions) gently rinse your mouth with warm salt water for 5-10 minutes while your denture is out of your mouth. Do not spit, let the water roll out of your mouth. DO this 4-6 times a day for the next week, then 2-3 times a day.
- After the first day (24 hours) remove your denture at bedtime and repeat the cleaning procedure in step 2. however instead of putting the denture back in your mouth, soak it overnight in a denture cleaning solution or water. from this day on you may begin to leave your denture out at bedtime to let your gums rest over night. Always clean your denture and soak it over night, never let your denture sit out and dry.
- It is not at all unusual to need denture adhesive to help hold the denture securely in place following extractions. As the gums heal, they shrink and the denture becomes loose. the adhesive will give you added confidence. Please do not use adhesive for the first 3 weeks after the extractions have been done. We do not want any adhesive in the extraction socket, this will require additional surgery to remove.
- To help the denture fit more snug, many times a temporary soft liner is placed. Please come back to the office for this procedure if needed.
Post Surgical Instructions

- After 30-60 minutes gently remove the gauze from your mouth. if you have been given medication, this is the time to take your first dose. a slight amount of bleeding or oozing may persist for 24 hours.
